COVID-19 Project: Alternative PPE
Personal protective equipment, commonly abbreviated “PPE,” is worn to minimize an individual’s exposure to environmental hazards that can cause illness(es). Healthcare workers rely on such equipment–including gloves , gowns, and face shields–to protect themselves from chemicals, airborne particulates, and other biohazards they encounter in their daily work. Unfortunately, growing concerns about the coronavirus pandemic has triggered a shortage of PPE in the United States and around the world.
In response to the shortage of PPE, hospitals and healthcare organizations are seeking alternatives to protect their staff who are on the frontlines of this new healthcare crisis. This project tasks students to design simple, affordable, and easy-to-manufacture PPE such as gloves, gowns, and/or face shields.
